If you’re coming from further afield in Cambridgeshire, you’ll be able to make use of the wide assortment of nearby A roads to get there, including the A1, A47 and A15. If you don’t fancy getting lost on your first trip to Peterborough test centre, be sure to use these directions with your trusty sat nav.

A Bit More About Peterborough

No matter which test centre you head to for your practical, the format will remain largely the same. The only real difference is the exact roads that the examiner will use in the route. For the most part, they’re just looking to test your skills and confidence when you’re pitted against different speed and traffic systems, road features like roundabouts, and the dreaded manoeuvres. It might sound intimidating, but it’s not much different from your driving lessons.

With Peterborough’s vicinity to the local industrial estate, you can expect a bit of congestion during rush hour. Your clutch control will need to be on point here when facing start-stop traffic. There are also a lot of local schools nearby, like City of Peterborough Academy Special School, so keep your eyes peeled for any changes in speed limits. The examiner will likely guide you towards the city centre, which can get hectic, before switching to a quieter area for you to demonstrate one of the driving test manoeuvres.

Peterborough Test Route

Desperate to get your hands on your Peterborough test route to start memorising it? Unfortunately, with the DVSA no longer publishing up-to-date routes, this won’t be happening anytime soon. If you’re learning with a local instructor, however, this shouldn’t be a problem. They’ll have you building up your skills on the roads most likely to crop up on your route. By the time your test rolls on by, you’ll likely recognise most of the route! If that’s not enough to assuage your nerves, try watching videos of Peterborough test routes on YouTube. Alternatively, you can download our sample Peterborough driving test routes!

Peterborough Test Pass Rates

One of the biggest areas of interest for learner drivers tends to be driving test pass rates. After all, who doesn’t want to know how other people perform on a test? That’s why we try to compile the most relevant statistics for learners in our essential test centre guides. If we’re starting out on a general scale, learners in the UK currently have a 45.9% chance of passing their test. If you’re looking for something more specific, you can see how learners have performed at Peterborough in the last five years below...

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
46.9% 52.6% 49.2% 45.1% 45.7%

As you can see, pass rates at Peterborough have mostly been above the national average. That’s pretty darn impressive for a test centre! Before you start relaxing, however, bear in mind that the examiner won’t be looking at pass rates when they assess your driving. They’ll be concentrating on your skills and overall performance. So, remove the thought of pass rates from your brain and focus instead on your driving lessons!

What If I Can’t Go To Peterborough?

If you’ve had a bad experience at Peterborough test centre, or you simply want a change in scenery, you could switch test centres. Similarly, if you’re looking to increase your chances of getting a test date sooner, you could pick a backup test centre—there are plenty near your local area. If you’re sticking close to Peterborough, your closest options are Kettering and Cambridge (Brookmount Court).

What To Expect On The Day

Though it might only seem like yesterday that you were crying at the prospect of driving on a dual carriageway for the first time, it’s finally time for you to take the dreaded driving test. As terrifying as it might seem, remember that it will only last around forty minutes—that’s shorter than any lesson you’ll have ever taken. Plus, most instructors tend to make their lessons a bit more challenging than the actual test in order to over-prepare their learners. It’s safe to say that you’re more than ready for this.

Before you head out on your big day, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got your provisional licence with you. The examiner will need to see it before your test starts, so don’t forget it. Also, given how temperamental traffic can be, give yourself enough time to get to Peterborough test centre. The DVSA encourages learners to get there 10 minutes before their appointment starts.

Your test will then follow this straightforward format:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

Your driving test will finally end once you’ve parked back up at Peterborough test centre. As eager as you might be for your result, you’ll want to hold your horses. The examiner will need a few minutes to finish their paperwork. Once they’re done, they’ll let you know whether you’ve passed or failed. You’ll be able to take a closer look at which areas you received faults in (if any) with either a physical feedback sheet, or over email via the driving test app.

But What If I Fail?

Though no-one ever wants to think about failing, it’s always a possibility when it comes to tests. Whether it’s a case of nerves or a few simple mistakes, there are plenty of reasons as to why you might fail. What’s important, however, is that you get back behind the wheel after it happens. Don’t let one bad experience put you off driving. Instead, take a closer look at your driving test mark sheet and figure out which areas you need to work on. Once you know that, you can take a refresher course to iron out your bad habits.

Improve Your Chances With PassMeFast

When it comes to learning to drive, the way you decide to learn will either help or hinder your chances of success.
