MANUAL DRIVING LESSONS

Unsure whether manual driving lessons are for you? One of the first decisions you make when you learn to drive is what transmission you'll be driving in. It's something everyone seems to have an opinion on, but it's important to decide what's right for you.

How do manual driving lessons work?

Your manual driving lessons will follow the same process as automatic ones, but your instructor will teach you how and when to switch gears. You'll need to use an extra pedal, the clutch, to do this.

Driving lessons provide valuable skills that build confidence and safety on the road. Throughout your manual driving lessons, you'll learn everything from cockpit controls to manoeuvres, and although it seems daunting at first, switching gears and using the clutch pedal will quickly become like second nature.

Manual Driving Lessons: Are they for me?

Manual driving lessons can be a bit more difficult than automatic ones, but passing in a manual car will open up more opportunities when you're buying a car.

Driving in a manual car is pretty similar to an automatic, but with one key difference. Whilst in a automatic car, the gearbox switches gears by itself, whereas you'll have to do this yourself in a manual car.

Most people can adapt to driving a manual car quite easily, though people with certain disabilities or a lack of control of their left leg might prefer to drive an automatic car.

Whether you're interested in the flexibility and engagement of driving a manual car, or considering automatic lessons as well, we've got you covered. For more information on our automatic driving lessons, click below.

Are manual cars being banned?

Manual cars themselves aren't being banned, but the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned by 2035. This means that, over time, manual cars will become phased out in favour of automatic or electric vehicles.

You might want to think about whether this upcoming ban will affect you, but our recommendation is not to worry about it when deciding what transmission you'll learn to drive in.

2035 is still a long time away, and passing in a manual car means you can drive both manual and automatic transmissions. You'll still be able to buy and drive a new manual car for a good few years yet, and can easily switch to automatic when the time is right.
