Practical Driving Test Centres in Wigan

There is a test centre in the Wigan area—but it might not necessarily be in the area you’d expect. In fact, the closest test centre to Wigan is actually the Atherton practical test centre. Aside from Atherton, some in the Wigan area may choose to cross the border into Merseyside to take their test at the St Helens test centre.

  • It was made an urban district in 1894 by the Local Government Act
  • In the 19th century the area was famous for the manufacture of hinges and locks
  • The buildings that are now the local high schools (Byrchall and St Edmund Arrowsmith) were used as POW camps during the Second World War

  • The town's name means 'stream where the marsh marigolds grow'
  • A number of farms in the area still belong to the same families who originally owned them
  • Coal mining played a big part in the town's economy—in 1979, an explosion in the colliery resulted in the death of 10 miners
  • World champion boxer Peter Kane was raised here; a square in the town is even named after him
