Bangor

Bangor isn’t just the oldest city in Wales; it’s also home to one of only three practical test centres in the county of Gwynedd. It rests, like many other practical test centres, in the middle of a local industrial estate, which means that the surrounding area will likely be busy, especially during rush hour. If you’ve decided to bite the bullet here, you should try to familiarise yourself with both the test centre and the driving test.

Fortunately, we’ve done all of the heavy lifting to make this process easier for you. In our handy guide below, you’ll find all the vital information you might need to know before taking the test, including contact details, pass rates and more!

How To Get There

If you’re learning to drive with a local ADI, you’ll eventually be guided towards Bangor test centre so that you can build up a knowledge of its local roads and potential test routes. If you’re interested in taking a look around before this happens, you’ll want to use these directions to avoid getting lost.

A Bit More About Bangor

Wondering what your driving test will be like? The examiner will start the ball rolling by guiding you out of Llandygai Industrial Estate and potentially nudging you towards the centre of Bangor itself. As you’d expect, this means you’ll end up facing a steady stream of foot and road traffic. The trick to success here is through frequent observations (including your blindspots) and expert clutch control.

The city centre has a wide range of car parks, which the examiner might make use of for your driving test manoeuvre demonstration. Alternatively, they might have you do it on one of the roads around Hirael, where you might not experience as many interruptions. Eventually, things will start to speed up as the examiner guides you onto one of the local, bustling A roads.

Their choice will depend entirely on the test route (which will be picked at random). You could end up on the A5 towards Bethesda, the A55 down to Llanfairfechan, or even on the A487 towards Caernarfon. As long as you’ve taken lessons with a DVSA-approved instructor, however, you should be more than prepared for what happens.

Bangor Test Pass Rates

Trying to figure out if the driving test really is as difficult or easy as everyone says? Though it’s all down to personal opinion, you can get a rough idea by looking at pass rates. The national average, for example, stands at 45.9%. So, whilst it’s clearly not a walk in the park, it’s not entirely impossible.

Learners heading to Bangor test centre seem to fare slightly better than the national average, however, as you can see in the table below...

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
52.3% 55.6% 54.4% 51.8% 50.7%

What If I Can't Go To Bangor?

If you’re eager to pass your test as soon as possible, the best way to increase your chances of finding an earlier test date is by picking a backup test centre option. If you’re staying close to the Bangor area, your nearest options are:

What To Expect On The Day

After spending weeks crying over stalling the car every two seconds, and mastering the tricky manoeuvres, you’re finally ready to take your driving test. Way to go! You’ve come a long way from where you started, so you should be proud of yourself no matter what happens in the driving test.

Unless you fancy all of that hard work (plus your test fee!) going to waste, you’ll want to double check that you have your provisional when you go in for your test. The examiner will ask to see it to confirm your identity, so you won’t be able to proceed without it. You’ll also need to get to Bangor ten minutes early so that you have enough time to park up and meet the examiner.

Once that’s out of the way, your driving test will proceed with:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination
