Booking a driving course is one of the best investments you'll ever make. Being able to hit the road is the ultimate independence, it opens new job and travel opportunities, and frees you from public transport (or begging your parents/mates for lifts).

Other driving schools promise a more intensive experience. This usually means that you'll need to take all your driving lessons within a week. And sometimes you’ll even be expected to travel (and possibly stay overnight) at the school’s location. Can't take the time off work? Tough luck! And you often won't be able to take your test straight after your lessons end — instead, you'll be left twiddling your thumbs while you wait for a test booking.

If you don't have a valid theory test pass number, make sure to add a theory test onto your course when making your booking. • When you'd like your test to take place
• Your availability for lessons and tests

So, your test is arranged and your instructor is ready to pick you up from home or work. That can only mean one thing: you're about to start your PassMeFast course!

Each individual course will be unique. If you're completely new to driving, for example, you'll start by learning a few basic rules and moving the car around quiet roads. A more experienced learner will be practicing manoeuvres and heading out onto busier A-roads.

Because your practical test has already been arranged, you'll be able to spend lessons in the area around your chosen test centre. This gives you the confidence of knowing that, by the time your test comes around, you'll be familiar with the local roads — sparing you any nasty surprises that trip up unprepared learners.

All your hard work has been leading up to this: the practical test. No matter which test centre you head to, the format will be the same:

1. For safety reasons, the examiner will perform an eyesight test. Here, you'll need to read a licence plate from 20 metres. You’re allowed to wear glasses, and if you require them to see clearly, you must always wear them when driving.
2. You'll be asked two questions about vehicle maintenance and safety. These are known as ‘show me, tell me’ questions, as each question begins with one of these phrases. The first of these questions (the ‘tell me’ question) will be asked when you're stood outside of the car. The second question (the ‘show me’ question) will be asked when you're behind the wheel.
3. The actual driving part of the test will begin with a 20-minute-long general driving section. During this section, the examiner will provide directions for you to follow (e.g., “At the end of the road, turn right”). You'll also be asked to pull up safely at the side of the road on several occasions.
4. The general driving section is usually also when they'll ask you to perform one of three reversing manoeuvres. If you're not asked to do so here, you'll need to perform one of them at the end of the test as you drive back to the test centre. The manoeuvres are: Bay parking. parallel parking and pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing two car lengths, and rejoining the traffic.
5. The next section is the independent driving section of the test. For four in every five candidates, this will involve following directions given by a sat nav; the remaining twenty percent will instead need to follow traffic signs. Deviating from the route generally isn't a major issue, so long as you don't commit any driving faults when doing so.
6. You'll then head back to the test centre and park up. The test is now finished. So, take a deep breath and relax — you've earned it! In a few moments, you'll find out your result. Fail, and your examiner will give you some feedback and let you know where you went wrong, giving you valuable tips to help you improve for next time. Pass, and you'll get a pass certificate to pose with, as well as the chance to send off for your full licence there and then. Either way, the examiner will also send your results sheet to you by email.
