By public transport
Harrogate is an easy place to explore via public transport. In fact, the theory test centre is only half a mile away from Harrogate train station, meaning you can get from one to the other on foot in around 10 minutes.
If buses are more your thing, you’re in luck! There are two bus stops very close to the test centre. So, depending on the route you’re taking, you should get off at either the Prince of Wales stop or the Beech Grove stop. Each is a speedy 2-minute walk from the test centre.
For more information on the local transport, including full timetables, check out the Visit Harrogate website.
Fancy travelling by car instead? That shouldn’t be a problem. Enter HG1 1BJ into the sat nav and hit the road. The test centre is actually located on the A61 (the major road that runs through the centre of Harrogate) so it shouldn’t be hard to find. No risk of getting lost down small residential streets!
As is usually the case, the theory test centre itself does not provide parking. Thankfully, though, there are some convenient and cheap options very close by. The best option is probably the West Park Multi-Storey car park. It’s only 2-minutes away and charges a very reasonable £1 for 2 hours of parking. If that option fails, go for the West Park car park. Same distance away, similar name, but they charge ever so slightly more—£1.40 for 2 hours (still not exactly breaking the bank!).
This theory test centre really shines when it comes to pass rates. Harrogate’s numbers sit consistently above the national average. Of course, that doesn’t actually mean you’ll probably get a better score if you take your theory test here rather than somewhere nearby—the test is exactly the same all over the country. How you do on the day is all down to how well you know the material!
Want to ace the theory test first time? Of course you do! The most effective way to do this is to learn the material and then leave yourself enough time to revise it, so that the information really sinks in. There are a range of useful resources out there that can help you with this process. We’ve listed a few of our favourites, below:
Nothing sets you up to ace a test better than a good night’s sleep beforehand. So, if you live in the area, make sure to get an early night. For those who are planning to come from out of town, why not treat yourself to a room in a local hotel the night before the test? That way you can head to the theory centre with a clear head and well-rested mind. Here are a few good options:
Good news! One of the nicest hotels in Harrogate is mere seconds away from the test centre itself. That’s right, you can stroll right from your bed to the test if you stay at the West Park Hotel. And why wouldn’t you?! It’s a chic boutique hotel with a gorgeous on-site restaurant and bar. Rooms are beautifully decorated and kitted out with luxurious toiletries. Treat yourself!
If you’d prefer to keep it cheap and cheerful, you’ll find the Travelodge in West Park to be a reliable choice. Despite the modest price, you’ll still get a king size bed, 30 minutes of free WiFi and a TV with freeview all to yourself. Plus, it’s only a 5-minute walk from the test centre. Comfort and convenience!
Why not push the boat out and spend the night in one of Harrogate’s finest establishments? The Hotel du Vin is only a 5-minute walk from the test centre and will not disappoint. Egyptian sheets, drench showers, complimentary WiFi—this place pulls out all of the stops. You’re sure to have a relaxing night that will set you up to ace that test the next day.
Places to Celebrate
After completing the test you most likely deserve a pat on the back and a swift drink. No matter your taste, there’s sure to be a cafe or pub in the local area that can serve you up something to your liking. Here are a few places we recommend:
This traditional family run pub is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing pint. With a wide range of real ales, ciders and whisky on the menu, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Belly rumbling? No need to move on. The Coach and Horses also boasts a delicious food menu, loaded with all of the pub classics you would expect. Did we mention it’s a 1-minute walk from the test centre?
Home to a legendary afternoon tea, Betty’s has been in Harrogate for nearly 100 years! Whether you fancy some British favourites or continental classics, Betty’s has something on the menu that will satisfy your tastebuds. Set in a stylish building with a rich history, this is a great venue in which to decompress and treat yourself.
If you’re looking for a bit of entertainment along with a drink or two, the Blues Cafe Bar is the place to be. They host live music every night of the week! The hotspot also recently launched a Yorkshire tapas bar. That’s right—small plates of delicious northern classics. Have a drink, enjoy the sounds and sample a bit of ‘tatties bravas’. Yum!
