How To Get There

Conveniently located in the centre of Lichfield, learners can reach the test centre easily enough by taking A roads like the A38 and A51 until road signs take you to Lower Sandford Street. If you’re not entirely sure what way to approach from, why not let your sat nav do the heavy lifting? Simply input these directions and your sat nav will give you the best route. Once you’re used to the area, of course, you’ll be able to head there with your eyes closed!

A Bit More About Lichfield

If you’re looking to become a fully qualified driver at Lichfield test centre, prepare to face a range of road features and types. The examiner will take you through narrow streets with tricky junctions—so make sure your observations are on point—and onto busier roads like the A38 and A51. If you’re not a fan of roundabouts, you’re out of luck. The examiner will likely take you on the roundabout off Friary Road. With a local university nearby, you might also want to be wary of heavy foot traffic during the week. If you’re looking to familiarise yourself with the area outside of lessons, you’ll first want to find out who can sit with a learner driver. You don’t want to break the law, do you?

Of course, you should never take pass rates as a serious measure of how well you’ll do on your big day. Instead, you should concentrate on your lessons and pay attention to the advice given to you by your driving instructor.

What If I Can’t Go To Lichfield?

Whether you’re looking for a backup option or an alternative, Staffordshire has plenty of test centres for you to choose from. The closest options near Lichfield are Stafford and Burton-on-Trent.

What To Expect On The Day

In what seems like the blink of an eye, your test date will finally be upon you! Though you might not feel 100% ready, you should remember that your driving instructor wouldn’t let you go in for your test if they didn’t think your driving was up to scratch. It’d be pretty counterproductive! When you go in for your practical, try to get to the centre around 10 minutes early. Do not forget your provisional—otherwise, your test will be cancelled.

The practical test is straightforward enough. It will follow this format:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

After 40 minutes or so, you’ll eventually end up back at Lichfield test centre. You’ll be advised to park up and come to a stop. Then, the examiner will walk you through any of driving test faults you might have accumulated during the practical. If you received no more than 15 minor faults, you’ll officially become a fully qualified driver. If you received more, or any major faults, you’ll fail.

But What If I Fail?

Whilst we know it’s always easier said than done, it’s vital that you don’t let it get you down too much. Plenty of learners fail their test—why do you think the national average only stands at 45.8%? The best way to get over failing your test is to get back behind the wheel with your instructor. Trust us, with a refresher course, you’ll be raring to go in no time.
