Located smack bang in the middle of a bustling industrial estate, Basildon test centre is right next to Gardiners Lane South and the busy A127. The town’s train station and Eastgate shopping centre, meanwhile, are a mere nine-minute drive away. As such, this test centre is easy to get to for local learners and even those travelling further afield in the Essex area. If you want to take a look around the centre before your lessons, just use these directions and you’ll get there hassle-free.

A Bit More About Basildon

Candidates looking to take their practical at Basildon test centre will have to face a range of local, tricky road types and features before they can hope to get their hands on their full driving licence. From testing your ability to face high-speed roads like the A13 and A127 to observing your manoeuvring skills on quiet, residential streets, your driving examiner will pit you against all the challenges that Basildon has to offer. Basildon Test Route

No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to get an up-to-date test route for Basildon—the DVSA no longer publishes routes. Fortunately, you can still get ahead of the game and find out which roads are likely to appear on your practical by watching videos of Basildon test routes on YouTube. If you’re panicking, remember that your instructor will likely be familiar with most of Basildon’s test routes. As such, they’ll have introduced you to most—if not all—of the roads that will feature on your test.

Basildon Test Pass Rates

Nothing seems to interest learner drivers as much as driving test pass rates—both to get an idea of what their chances are and to measure themselves up against other learners. Using stats published by the DVSA, we can tell you that the overall pass rate in the UK is 45.9%. This decreases ever so slightly for those in the East of England, with a 46.3% pass rate. As for learners at Basildon test centre, you can get pass rates from the last five years below…

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
42.6% 36.9% 35.6% 42.8% 46.7%

With pass rates falling short of the average for both the UK and those in the East of England, we can see why you might be disappointed with Basildon test centre. However, as we tell all of our learners, pass rates aren’t what determine the outcome of your test. If you put in the effort, it will pay off.

What If I Can’t Go To Basildon?

If you’re looking for a backup option or just an alternative, Basildon isn’t the only test centre on offer in Essex. Your closest options are Brentwood and Southend-on-Sea.

What To Expect On The Day

If you’re getting cold feet before your practical, don’t worry—you’re not the first learner driver to suffer from test day nerves. While it will certainly be a challenge, it’s certainly not impossible. In fact, the practical test is probably the most straightforward part of learning to drive, as you’re using skills you’ll have already practised plenty of times. No matter where you take your test in the UK, meanwhile, the test will follow the same process. On your big day, you need to get to Basildon test centre 10 minutes early with your provisional. Once you leave the waiting room with your examiner, your test will follow this layout:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

When you get back to Basildon test centre you can let out a sigh of relief—your test is officially over! All that’s left is to wait for the examiner to tot up your driving test faults and give you your result. If you’re successful, you’ll be handed a test pass certificate which you can then pose with for a celebratory pass photo! If you’re not successful, keep hold of your feedback sheet—it will be useful for any subsequent lessons you have.

But What If I Fail?

It doesn’t matter which driving school you learn with or what test centre you head to, you can’t get a guaranteed pass. When it comes to the driving test, some learners are successful and others just need a few more tries. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, see which areas you need more work on with your feedback sheet and get back up to speed with a refresher course.
