By public transport
Learners lacking the option of catching a lift to their test from a friend or family member will be pleased to learn that this test centre is fairly centrally located. At just a 9-minute walk from Northampton train station, it’s ideal for those travelling into town by rail.
Then again, a bus could get you even closer! Get off at either the Sol Central or St Peter’s Walk bus stops and you’ll only need to be on your feet for around 3 minutes before you find the test centre entrance.
Want to learn more about public transport in Northampton? The Northamptonshire County Council website should be able to meet all of your needs.
Getting a lift to your test appointment instead? Jot down the postcode, NN1 2QZ, so that whoever’s driving can access directions. You’ll find the test centre just off the A508 on St Katherine’s Street. The test centre is housed in a large building called Sol House, the sign for which you’ll see displayed outside.
Keep in mind that the DVSA are big fans of punctuality. If you show up to your test appointment late, it may not go ahead. We therefore recommend that you give yourself plenty of time to get to the test centre in case you run into any traffic along the way.
Planning on parking the car while you sit your theory test? Not a problem. Make sure that the driver is aware that there is no parking available at the test centre itself. You can, however, point them in the direction of a couple of affordable options nearby.
The most convenient solution will probably be the Sol Northampton car park (NN1 1SR) which is 2 minutes away. Here you can park for 2 hours for only £1.50. Failing that, they could also try the Doddridge Street car park (NN1 2RN). It’s only a 4-minute walk from the test centre and charges a very reasonable £2 for 2 hours of parking.
As you can probably tell from a quick glance over the statistics from the past few years, the pass rate at this test centre doesn’t seem to be heading in the right direction. They remained stable for a few years and then dropped below the national average in 2018/19.
You shouldn’t see this as a reason not to select this test centre, though! These figures are for the DVSA to worry about, and have very little impact on individual learners. As long as you put in enough revision for the theory test, there’s no reason you can’t earn a first time pass!
Sadly, the theory test isn’t something you can pass by luck or fluke. It’s a formal test that requires a fairly significant amount of preparation. Make sure you know what is expected of you on the day and study the relevant material until you can confidently answer questions on it.
