By public transport
Learners lacking the option of catching a lift to their test from a friend or family member will be pleased to learn that this test centre is fairly centrally located. At just a 15-minute walk from Northampton train station, it’s ideal for those travelling into town by rail.
Then again, a bus could get you even closer! Get off at the Derngate bus stop and you’ll only need to be on your feet for around 2 minutes before you find the test centre entrance.

By car
Getting a lift to your test appointment instead? Jot down the postcode, NN1 1UE, so that whoever’s driving can access directions.
Keep in mind that the DVSA are big fans of punctuality. If you show up to your test appointment late, it may not go ahead. We, therefore, recommend that you give yourself plenty of time to get to the test centre in case you run into any traffic along the way.
Parking
Planning on parking the car while you sit your theory test? Not a problem. Make sure that the driver is aware that there is no parking available at the test centre itself. You can, however, point them in the direction of a couple of affordable options nearby.
The most convenient solution will probably be the Hazelwood car park (NN1 1LG) which is 2 minutes away. Here you can park for 2 hours for only £2. Failing that, they could also try the Albion Place car park (NN1 1UD). It’s only a 3-minute walk from the test centre and charges a very reasonable £2 for 2 hours of parking.
As you can probably tell from a quick glance over the statistics from the past few years, the pass rate at this test centre doesn’t seem to be heading in the right direction. They remained stable for a few years and then dropped below the national average in 2018/19.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 | 2020-21 | 2021-22 |
47.7% | 47.7% | 47.7% | 45.9% | 46.2% | 53.9% | 50.6% |
You shouldn’t see this as a reason not to select this test centre, though! These figures are for the DVSA to worry about and have very little impact on individual learners. As long as you put in enough revision for the theory test, there’s no reason you can’t earn a first-time pass!
Sadly, the theory test isn’t something you can pass by luck or fluke. It’s a formal test that requires a fairly significant amount of preparation. Make sure you know what is expected of you on the day and study the relevant material until you can confidently answer questions on it.
