The Stockport theory test centre is conveniently located a 20-minute walk away from Stockport train station. Be advised that certain routes may include private roads, so be sure to check a map before you set off. Those of you coming from the north may find that Heaton Chapel train station is a better option. From here, it will be a 25-minute walk to your theory test.
If you prefer the bus to walking—good news! You’ll find that the Kingsgate and Wellesley House stops are only a minute or two away from the centre. You can catch buses to these stops from both train stations and towns located further afield. If you’d like more information on local transport, Stockport Council is likely to hold the answers.
Arriving at Stockport theory test centre by car is also a viable option. Simply enter SK4 1LW into your sat nav and follow the directions given. The centre itself is actually located just off the M60 (Manchester Outer Ring Rd). Turn off at Wellington Road and the test centre should be just ahead of you.
When it comes to finding a spot for your car, you have quite a few options nearby. Your best bet is to head over to Heaton Lane car park, which is a mere 6-minute walk from the theory test centre. Two hours of parking here will set you back just £1.80. There’s also the option of free parking on Athol Street, but keep in mind that there are only 15 spaces here, so you’ll be lucky to nab one. Finally, if you want to be sure of a space, make your way to the NCP car park at Merseyway. Their prices are still reasonable, at £1.80 for 2 hours, but it will be a 13-minute walk to the test centre.
Stockport’s current pass rate sits just over the national average, though overall it has been steadily declining over the last decade. This shouldn’t cause you any panic, though. The place you sit the test has very little to do with your likelihood of passing. Every centre provides exactly the same test—how it goes is up to you!

Feeling fresh and alert on the day of your test will largely depend on whether you managed to have a good sleep the night before. If you’re not from the Stockport area, it’s a good idea to book yourself into a nearby hotel the day before your test. This ensures you can be clear-headed and confident when you take your theory. They only have 4 rooms available, so snatch one up quick!
For those who prefer something bargainous and basic, you can’t go wrong with a Travelodge. 5-star it may not be, but you still get free WiFi, plush bedding and great service, all for a very reasonable price. Not too shabby, eh? Even better—it’s only a 5-minute walk to the test centre. Savour breakfast and skip the traffic!
