Derby theory test centre is located just outside the city centre, in the Little Chester area. This means it isn’t exactly close to Derby Midland train station, but if you’re happy to travel just under 30 minutes on foot, you can walk here from the station.
To save some time (and your poor feet!) you could take a bus to your test instead. From the St Paul’s Church bus stop, it’s only a 2-minute walk to the test centre.
If you require more detailed information about the transport options in this area, have a browse of the Derby City Council website.
Skipping public transport altogether and getting a lift to your test instead? Nice going! Just enter DE1 3TT into a sat nav and follow the directions. Derby itself is a city, so we’d recommend leaving plenty of extra time for your journey to account for the traffic you may encounter around the centre.
As soon as you find yourself on the large roundabout to the right of St Paul’s Cathedral, take the Prime Parkway exit and the theory test centre will be on your right.
Getting to the theory test is one thing, but finding somewhere for your designated driver to park their car is another task in itself. Theory test centres rarely provide on-site parking, so you’ll need to look for car parks in the surrounding area.
Thankfully for you, PassMeFast has done the research on your behalf! The closest public parking option to the test centre is Phoenix Street car park (DE1 2ER). It boasts 110 spaces and charges £2 for 2 hours of parking. You’ll find it a 12-minute walk away from the test centre.
Alternatively, you could also try the Sowter Road car park (DE1 3DQ). It’s 13 minutes away from the theory test centre and will set you back £2.50 for 2 hours of parking.
A few years ago, the pass rates at Derby theory test centre were well above average. As you can see, though, they’ve recently been in a state of decline. While not terrible, they are just below the national average.
Chin up! When it comes down to it, statistics like pass rates don’t have much of an impact on learners. The theory test is the same no matter where you take it, which means how you perform on the day is down to you!
Determined to pass your theory test first time? You’d better get studying! Make sure you know exactly what to expect on test day and revise the relevant material. While it’s nothing to get yourself in a tiz over, the theory test does require some hard work if you want to be successful. To help make the revision process a little easier, we’ve included some great study resources below.
To do your best on the theory test you need to show up on top form. That means getting plenty of rest, fuelling up with a solid meal and keeping a clear head. If you’re not from Derby but want to take your test here, you should consider staying overnight at a local hotel. Here are some great options in the area:
At just a 15-minute walk from the test centre, this Travelodge certainly ticks the box for convenience! It’s also located on the edge of Derby Cricket Ground—great for sports fans and those who like a bit of greenery in their surroundings. All rooms are kitted out with a king-size bed, Freeview TV and your very own desk. They’ll even throw in 30 minutes of free WiFi for no extra cost!
Even closer to the test centre (10 minutes away), you’ll find this Jury’s Inn. A slight step up from the budget facilities of the Travelodge, this place includes a swanky onsite restaurant and a cardio gym. Rooms are clean, airy and tastefully decorated. You can also expect great service from the hotel’s friendly and welcoming staff.
For those who fancy a bit of luxury during their short stay, it has to be the Cathedral Quarter Hotel. This place pulls out all the stops to ensure you have a fabulous stay. On top of all the normal things you’d expect from a hotel, Cathedral Quarter also offers oversized shower heads, designer TVs and complimentary wifi throughout your stay.
When the test is over it’s (hopefully) time to celebrate! There are plenty of venues around Derby where it’s worth taking a pit stop before calling it a day. Check out a few of our favourites:
This place claims to have “the charm of a rural pub in the urban sprawl of Derby city”—and they’re not wrong! It’s a delightful pub that offers cask ales, fine wines and some really delicious food. There’s also a lovely little beer garden out back, which you must visit if the weather’s nice enough!
Any gin lovers out there will thoroughly enjoy a trip to Rowley’s. They have a vast selection of tasty and intriguing gins to pair with a range of different tonics and botanicals. There’s also free snacks on offer (don’t mind if we do!) and daily deals on all things juniper-based.
This is a pub best suited to people who take their beer seriously. The Furnace Inn specialises in craft keg beers that can be enjoyed in the comfort of the bar or outside in the beer garden. You can even check in online to let everyone know what type of beer you’re enjoying there!
And that’s pretty much everything you need to know about the Derby theory test centre! It’s an excellent choice if you’re planning to arrive at your test by car, bus and even train (as long as you don’t mind a bit of a walk!).
As soon as the theory test certificate is firmly in your grasp, it’s time to turn your attention to the practical test. Use the number on your certificate to book a test slot and start brushing up on your driving skills! If you’re from Derby it makes sense to take your test at the Derby practical test centre.
