What To Expect On The Day

After completing your tuition with an ADI, you’ll finally be ready to take the plunge and take your practical test. It’s the final step before you become a qualified driver, so it’s important that you prepare properly. On the day, get to the centre 10 minutes early and bring your provisional licence. The test will follow this format:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

The test will end once you’re back at Hendon test centre. The examiner will then give you your result. In any case, you'll receive verbal and written feedback regarding any driving test faults you picked up. If you pass, you’ll also be given a test pass certificate and the chance to send off for your new licence then and there.

But What If I Fail?

Failing your driving test isn’t the end of the world. Plenty of learners fail—some with driving test horror stories worse than anything you’re likely to experience! As long as you remember what you did wrong and actively try to improve your driving skills, you should be more than prepared the next time round.
