Arriving at Mansfield Theory Test Centre

By public transport

The good news is that the Mansfield theory test centre is located pretty much slap bang in the middle of town. If you are travelling here from another area, one of your best public transport options is the train. From Mansfield railway station it will only take you 5 minutes to walk to the test centre.

Getting the bus is also a super convenient option. Hop off at either the Union Street or Quaker Way stop, and you can be at your test in under 3 minutes!

For more detailed information on the transport links serving this area, head over to the Mansfield Council website.

By car

If you’ve managed to bag yourself a lift to your test then you can skip all of that public transport malarkey! Get the person driving the car to enter the centre’s postcode into their sat nav and follow the directions.

Insider tip: for some reason the postcode provided by the DVSA is slightly off—using NG18 1RW (rather than NG18 1QL) will actually take you to the front entrance of the test centre.

The test centre is situated on one of Mansfield’s main roads (Rosemary Street), which you’ll find just off the A38 and Chesterfield Road South—depending on your direction of approach.

Parking

We’ll hit you with the bad news first: there’s no parking available at the test centre itself. Don’t give up on Mansfield just yet, though! Nearby you’ll find plenty of affordable places to leave the car for a couple of hours.

Your best bet is the Stockwell Gate North car park (NG18 1QN). This is located just 2 minutes from the test centre and charges a very reasonable £2 for 2 hours of parking. If, for some reason, all 118 spaces have been snapped up here, head to the Walkden Street car park (NG18 1QN). It’s a slightly longer (but still very manageable) 6 minutes away from the test centre and charges exactly the same price. There are over 300 spaces here, too, so we’d be surprised if you’re unlucky enough to miss out on one!

Pass Rates by Year

A few years ago the pass rates at Mansfield were pretty strong but, alas, time has not been kind to this theory test centre. Despite a recent increase, the pass rates are back on the decline and currently sit below the national average.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
46.5% 44.9% 45.7% 45.0% 45.1%

What you need to understand, though, is that these figures aren’t really meant to help learners decide where to take their test. In fact, pass rates have little (if any) impact on individual learners. The DVSA uses them to chart national trends. All learners should worry about is how prepared they are for the test.

Guides and Tips

Before taking any test, you should make sure you have a good idea of what to expect in terms of format and material. The theory test is no different. You should know the difference between the multiple choice and hazard perception sections, and be ready to show off your driving knowledge.

Not sure if you actually have the knowledge that is required? Best get studying! The highway code and practice tests are a great place to start. Check out some of the resources we’ve listed below to help you prepare.

Hotels

Those travelling to their theory test from outside of Mansfield might consider staying the night in a local hotel the night before. It’s a great way to avoid any traffic issues in the morning and get your bearings before the big day. Here are some options in the local area:

The Clifton Hotel★★☆☆☆

At just a 12-minute walk from the test centre, the Clifton Hotel is one of your most convenient options in town. Fancy it ain’t, but for a short stay it does the job. It’s in a quiet street so you can expect a restful night’s sleep, and each room is equipped with a TV and a kettle. As an extra bonus, a home-cooked breakfast is included in the price of your room—tasty!

Travelodge Mansfield ★★☆☆☆

For those who feel more comfortable with a well-known name they can trust, there is a Travelodge on the edge of town. Keep in mind that it is a 40-minute walk from the test centre, so you may want to get a taxi to the test or set off early! Rooms come with all the usual Travelodge amenities: cosy beds, Freeview TV and a handy desk.

Mansfield Manor ★★★☆☆

If a picturesque location is an important factor for you, then the Mansfield Manor Hotel should fit the bill. Situated on the edge of beautiful Carr Bank park, this hotel is a step up from the rest. Enjoy gorgeous views, tastefully decorated and comfortable rooms and free WiFi. Plus, if someone is driving you to Mansfield, there’s also free private parking available.

Places to Celebrate

Now for the fun stuff—where you should start the post-test celebrations. We know, we know, we’re probably getting a little ahead of ourselves. Then again, whether you pass or fail your theory test, you probably won’t say no to a drink and a sit down! Below we’ve listed a few of Mansfield’s establishments that are worth a quick visit.

Capo Lounge

If you’re torn between going for a slap up meal or a lovely cocktail, just head to Capo Lounge—where you can get both! They have an extensive menu of drinks, meals and all kinds of treats. The decor is quirky and fun, while the friendly staff will ensure you feel welcome as soon as you step in the door.

Andwhynot

This place is a fancy restaurant, casual bar and great night out all rolled into one! Sample a fine local ale, whet your appetite with one of their signature ‘pizettes’, or dive straight in with a 3 course meal. Andwhynot is the kind of place where you pop in for one drink and end up staying up all night throwing moves on the dance floor. Andwhynot?

The Market Inn

For those who just fancy a simple drink in a nice traditional pub, head behind the test centre to The Market Inn. There’s no food on offer because this place focuses on the quality of the drinks and entertainment. You’re sure to find a delightful tipple and great environment to put your feet up (not literally, though—that’s a bit rude).

What Happens Next?

So, there we have it! If Mansfield is your theory test centre of choice, you should manage to have a fairly stress-free test day. The wait time can be up to a month, though, so be sure to book that test in early.

Once the theory section of your driving journey is complete, it’s time to turn it up a notch and switch over to the practical side of things. Get lots of practice in behind the wheel and book yourself a test as soon as possible, to make up for the often lengthy wait times. For those who hail from Mansfield, the nearest practical test centres will be in Ashfield or Watnall.

If theory test day didn’t exactly go to plan, don’t get too down about it. Your next step should be to book another test and brush up on any areas you’re not confident with. Have a look at some top theory test resources to jazz up your revision plan.

Whatever your current driving scenario, if you want to earn that licence, PassMeFast can be of service.
