Arriving at Stevenage Theory Test Centre

By public transport

This theory test centre is situated just outside of town in a business park known as Meadway Corporate Centre. Thankfully, though, it is still relatively easy to get to by public transport. Taking the train, for instance? No problem! From Stevenage train station it will take you just under 25 minutes to walk to the centre.

If that doesn’t sound quite as convenient as you’d hoped, you can always count on the bus to give your legs a good old rest. The Rutherford Close bus stop is handily located just 2 minutes from where you’ll be taking the test!

For further details on the transport links serving Stevenage, have a scour of the Stevenage Borough Council website.

By car

Perhaps you’ve ditched the idea of public transport altogether and persuaded someone to give you a lift to the centre instead. Nice work! Tell that kind person to enter SG1 2EF into a sat nav device and simply follow the instructions.

Depending on your direction of travel, you’ll be accessing the business park from either the A1 or Gunnels Wood Road. Whichever it is, just follow the signs to Meadway.

Parking

Catching a lift to the test is all well and good, but if that person needs to park their car while you sit your theory, you may struggle to find a free spot. You see, very few test centres provide on-site parking and, sadly for you, Stevenage does not buck this trend.

Here’s the deal: your nearest parking options are going to be at least a 20-minute walk from the test centre, so you may as well get dropped off and picked up. If the driver does want to leave their car somewhere, they should head over to the Primett Road North car park (SG1 3DY). Sure, it’s 22 minutes away, but you’ll only be charged £1.50 for 2 hours of parking. You win some, you lose some!

Pass Rates by Year

Even though the pass rate at Stevenage test centre has been in a state of decline, the figures remain nothing to be worried about. It’s currently slightly above the national average.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
49.1% 49.0% 48.2% 47.3% 47.8%

Of course, pass rates shouldn’t really factor into your overall decision anyway. They paint a big picture of regional trends—they’re not to be taken as an indication of how well an individual learner is likely to fair in a particular location.

Guides and Tips

While the theory test is nothing to be nervous about, it does require that you devote some time to learning the relevant material. Heading in to the test with no idea of what to expect or how to answer the questions is a recipe for disaster! So, study the Highway Code, take a few practice tests and revise the stuff you think you already know. To make life easier, we’ve included some handy study aids, which you can find below.

ibis Stevenage Centre ★★☆☆☆

Perfect for a convenient short stay, this ibis is less than half an hour from the test centre on foot. For a very reasonable price you can enjoy a bright, clean room, WiFi, refreshment facilities and satellite TV. Plus, if you feel peckish at any point, just pop down to the on-site cafe!

The Gate Hotel ★★★☆☆

Another lovely accommodation option in Stevenage comes courtesy of The Gate Hotel. Situated just a 20-minute walk from the test centre, this charming hotel will make you feel right at home as soon as you cross the threshold. All rooms recently underwent a major refurbishment, so you can expect modern facilities and stylish decor. There’s also a restaurant and bar to cater to all of your refreshment needs!

Cromwell Hotel Old Stevenage ★★★☆☆

Last up on our list is this delightful hotel located in a beautifully-converted 16th century farmhouse. The original building actually belonged to John Thurloe, secretary to Oliver Cromwell (hence the name). If that historical claim to fame isn’t enough to entice you here, its stunning rooms and swanky eatery surely will! Better yet—it’s the closest hotel to the test centre, at a mere 18-minute walk away.
