By public transport
Heading to your theory test by rail? Good news! The theory test centre is just outside Chelmsford train station, so you will be able to make it with plenty of time to spare.
If the train isn't for you, then taking the bus is another option. Getting off at the Railway Station stop is your best bet, and again, the test centre is a stown's throw away.
If you’d like to learn more about Chelmsford’s transport options, head over to the Essex County Council’s website.
By car
Those deciding to skip public transport altogether and catch a lift to the test centre should be able to find it fairly easily. Save yourself the hassle of searching for a map and simply type CM1 1HT into a satnav.
Parking
As per usual, the theory test centre does not provide on-site parking. If the person driving you is planning to stick around to take you back home, they’re best off heading to the Townfield Street car park (CM1 1QX), which is just 3 minutes away. It charges £3 for 2 hours of parking and has over 700 spaces, so you're sure to find a spot.
The pass rate at Chelmsford theory test centre are fairly impressive, if not a little up and down. Plus, it has to be noted that they are consistently above average.
| 2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 | 2020-21 | 2021-22 |
| 51.6% | 51.5% | 52.8% | 50.9% | 52.0% | 59.8% | 56.6% |
High pass rates are all well and good, but they actually have very little impact on the performance of the individuals rocking up to these test centres. The likelihood of you passing first time largely depends on how much preparation you do.
What should you do to prepare for a test? Revise, of course! Yes, the theory test is no different to any other exam (unfortunately!). Make sure you read the highway code, study your traffic signs and practice your hazard perception skills. Make use of the revision aids we’ve listed below and you’ll feel super confident when the big day arrives!

Located on the actual site of an old bootmaker shop, this contemporary bar is a delightful place to grab a drink and watch the world go by. Or, if you just fancy something to wet the whistle, you’re sure to find something tempting on their impressive cocktail menu.
Selling itself as ‘Chelmsford’s favourite bar and restaurant’, The Bay Horse is a great place to do some people watching and relax in style. Fun fact: it's the oldest tavern in Chelmsford, dating back a whopping 250 years! It's had plenty of refurbs since then and dishes out fresh and tasy food for those looking for more than just a drink.
If fine beers and a down to earth atmosphere is more your style, skip the clubs and head to this charming ale house. The Orange Tree prides itself on offering a huge range of beers, many of which are brewed in the surrounding areas. According to them, every day is a beer festival—they sound like our kind of people!
