How To Get There

Heading to Kingussie for the first time without your driving instructor? It doesn’t have to be a trial by fire! Just use these directions with a sat nav and you can avoid ending up in the wrong place. Once you’re a bit more confident with the area, you can try heading there without any help.

A Bit More About Kingussie

Wondering what your driving test route will be like? It will start off with the examiner taking you up the B970 to drive around the centre of Kingussie. Now, there are a lot of hotels and local businesses in the area, so you’ll want to keep making frequent observations so that you’re able to take action quickly if anything changes on the road.

Some of the residential roads can get quite narrow, so they will be a challenge to navigate around if there are a lot of parked vehicles in the area. Your examiner might decide to have you demonstrate one of the manoeuvres on these roads, or they might pick out one of the local car parks instead.

The A9 and A86 both run through the town, so you’ll end up on one of them during your route. The examiner might take you down the A86, around Newtonmore, which comes with even more residential roads to test your skills against. Alternatively, they might guide you up the A9 towards an area like Silverglades. In either case, you’ll be dealing with tricky, rural roads, so you’ll need to take extra care when approaching bends.

Kingussie Test Pass Rates

When it comes to the driving test, learners in the UK have a 45.9% chance of passing. This pass rate isn’t a static number, though. It can vary depending on a range of factors, including how old the learner is, which area they take their test in and even what transmission they’re learning in.

Another factor that can affect this number is the test centre the learner heads to. Those taking the plunge at Kingussie seem to fare slightly better than the average, as you can see in the table below...

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
52.4% 54.3% 62.5% 55.6% 49.1%

  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
