Wanstead (London)

Wanstead driving test centre can be found on Hermon Hill road, next door to the Exclusive Bathroom & Tile Showroom. Though relatively small in size, the building has been the final hurdle for many learners in East London. If you're looking to take your test at Wanstead, we'd recommend getting to know the centre a bit better. How To Get There

Situated directly between Wanstead and Snaresbrook on the A113, Wanstead test centre is a popular option for learner drivers in East London. If you're looking to scout out the roads around the test centre before you start lessons—or you just want to check out where the centre is—simply use these directions. Please note that the test centre does not provide parking spaces, so you'll have to pull up on one of the nearby residential roads.

A Bit More About Wanstead

The location of Wanstead test centre is ideal in giving examiners a variety of road conditions. The test centre can be found between a quiet residential estate and busier roads like the A12 and North Circular. This gives examiners the opportunity to monitor skills like speed awareness, hazard perception and much more. If you're looking for more general information about Wanstead, simply check out these resources:

Wanstead Test Route

For obvious reasons, the DVSA doesn’t publish the exact test routes for Wanstead—or any other test centre, for the matter. Don't let this dishearten or discourage you, however. You can still get an idea of what might crop up on your test by looking at videos of Wanstead test routes on YouTube or by downloading our sample Wanstead driving test routes. If you're taking a driving course with a local ADI, you'll have plenty of time to learn the roads around Wanstead test centre inside and out. By the time you take your test, you'll be familiar with most of the roads that end up on your test route, e.g. the North Circular and A12.

Wanstead Test Pass Rates

Naturally, every learner wants to get their hands on pass rates for their chosen test centre. After all, they do give an interesting indication of how your preferred test centre compares with the rest of the country. So, for a bit of context, the average pass rate in the UK stands at 45.9%. Due to a combination of factors, things are a bit more difficult for those learning to drive in Greater London, with 40.8% of tests resulting in a pass. So, how does Wanstead stack up? Take a look at the statistics below to find out.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
32.0% 32.4% 33.4% 35.7% 34.7%

With pass rates sitting a good 7% lower than the Greater London average, Wanstead doesn’t exactly impress in this respect! However, just bear in mind that the examiner is testing you on your ability to drive: they won’t be thinking about the pass rates, and neither should you. With enough preparation, you’ll be able to sail through the exam.

What If I Can't Go To Wanstead?

Don’t worry if the waiting times are too long at Wanstead, or if any other factor is stopping you from choosing this test centre. There are plenty of other practical test centres nearby: Barking Town Quay and Barking Tanner Street are both less than 4 miles away, for instance. Chingford is also less than 4 miles away from Wanstead test centre.

What To Expect On The Day

The days leading up to your test will fly by, and by this point you’ll be more than capable of dealing with a range of driving challenges—roundabouts, box junctions, and busy dual carriageways will all be a part of your repertoire. On the day of your test, you need to get to Wanstead 10 minutes early and bring your provisional. The procedure of the practical itself will be as follows:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

Once you’re back at Wanstead test centre, we’re sure you’ll be ready to breathe a sigh of relief. However, things aren’t quite over yet. At this point, the examiner will complete their feedback sheet, and tell you whether you’ve passed or failed. If everything’s gone well, you’ll be given a test pass certificate, and you’ll be able to send off for your shiny new licence.

But What If I Fail?

You shouldn’t worry too much if you fail. After all, there are loads of factors that are out of your control on the day. So, don’t give up, assess what happened, and get back driving again!
