The centre is in the vicinity of the bustling A630 Sheffield Parkway, ensuring learners no difficulty with getting to it. If you'd like to get to Handsworth hassle-free, simply follow these directions

A Bit More About Sheffield

As we’ve said, the centre is located to the east of the Sheffield area. Its vicinity to the city centre means that you can expect busy and bustling roads—especially during rush hour. The busiest roads around the centre have to be the A57 and A630—likely to show up on your test—though, quieter residential roads are also likely to feature on your route. Handsworth Test Route

Although test routes aren't published by the DVSA anymore, you can still get an idea of what to expect by looking at videos of Handsworth test routes on YouTube or downloading our sample Handsworth driving test routes. It doesn’t really matter which test centre you take your practical at, however, as they all tend to incorporate the same road types on their test routes—from A roads and dual carriageways to one-way systems and residential roads. If you're working with a local ADI, they'll introduce you to the roads likely to feature on your test route.

Handsworth Test Pass Rates

Did you know that the DVSA publishes driving pass rates? This is how we know that the national average pass rate currently stands at 45.9%. If we break it down even further, it’s at a slightly higher 47.1% for learners in Yorkshire and the Humber. Is this the same for Handsworth test centre? Check out pass rates from the past five years below...

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
48.3% 45.0% 42.0% 43.4% 40.2%

Handsworth’s pass rates have been lower than the national average in recent years. However, it’s nothing to get worked up over. It’s your driving ability that determines the outcome of your test—not the pass rate. If you’re not convinced, ask your instructor if there are any particular areas you need to work on.

What If I Can't Go To Handsworth?

You’re in luck—learners in Sheffield can also head on over to Middlewood Road. Of course, there are plenty of other centres to go to in South Yorkshire.

What To Expect On The Day

You should be ready for your test after completing your driving lessons. Preparation for your practical is relatively simple—all you’ve got to do is get to Handsworth 10 minutes early, with your provisional. The test will then follow this format:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

The test will end, and you’ll be told straight away whether you’ve passed or failed. In either case, you'll receive a feedback sheet which will detail any faults you made. If you do pass, you'll get a test pass certificate—perfect for posing with in a pass photo! You'll also have to hand over your provisional in order to send off for your new driving licence.

But What If I Fail?

Plenty of learners fail their first practical test—or even their second or third—so you shouldn’t worry too much if this happens to you. Just take the feedback given to you by your examiner to improve the areas you’re weakest in.

If you are in need of another practical test, we can fast-track one for you. And if you’re looking for a confidence boost, you can always take one of our refresher courses. To get things moving, call us on 0333 123 4949 or contact us via our website.
